Berry Ashley House, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. B, 33rd Regiment, was born February 4, 1827 in Pitt County, NC where he resided as a farmer. On October 9, 1845 he married Nancy Andrews of Edgecombe County, NC. He enlisted in Edgecombe County, NC on July 31, 1861 at age 34. He was present or accounted for until he was reported absent/wounded at Fussell's Mill, VA August 16, 1864. His left leg was amputated. He was reported absent/wounded through February 1865. He died January 16, 1901 in Pitt County, NC.

House, James W. J., 2nd Lieut. NC Infantry, Co F, 30th Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Great Grandniece)

James W. J. House, 2nd Lieut. NC Infantry, Co F, 30th Regiment, was born December 18, 1833 in Pitt County, NC. On September 26, 1867 he married Mary M. Teel in Pitt County, NC. He resided in Edgecombe County, NC where he enlisted at age 26 on August 31, 1861. Mustered in as private. Promoted to sergeant on March 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Kelly's Ford, VA on or about November 7, 1863. Returned to duty prior to January 1, 1864. Elected 2nd Lieutenant on May 24, 1864. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right foot and captured at Appomattox Court House VA April 9, 1865. Confined at various federal hospitals until confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland May 9, 1865. Released on June 10, 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance. Nominated for the Badge of Distinction for Gallantry at Chancellorsville, VA May 1-4, 1863. He died August 17, 1924 in Vance County, NC.

Hyman, William Ashley, 1st Sergeant, Co. D, NC 44th Regiment (Jean Miller Adams, Granddaughter)

William Ashley Hyman was born in Pitt County, NC, where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Pitt Co. at age 18. He mustered in as a private on January 27, 1862. Promoted to corporal on September 8, 1863. Promoted to 1st Sergeant subsequent to October 31, 1864. Present or accounted for until he surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA April 9, 1865. North Carolina pension records indicate he was wounded at Wilderness, VA May 6, 1863. Soldier's Application for pension dated 15 May 1923. He is buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery in Greenville, NC.\

Johnston, Godfrey Stephen, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. H, 27th Regiment, (Cynthia Manning Smith, Great Great Grandniece)

Godfrey Stephen Johnston was born 1 May 1840 in Pitt County, NC. He died 3 December 1908 in Pitt County and is buried in a cemetery off of NC 33 near the old location of Parker's Chapel Church. He was married on 7 Feb 1866 to Elizabeth House (18 Dec 1847-30 Oct 1909).

He enlisted in Pitt Co on August 20, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded in the leg at Gum Swamp on May 22, 1863. Leg amputated. Reported absent wounded through October 1864. Reported absent on detail at Tarboro from December 1, 1864 through February 1865. Paroled at Greensboro on May 3, 1865.

Jones, Robert M., PVT, NC Infantry, Co. B, 23rd Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Grandniece)

Robert M. Jones was born December 6, 1842 in Pitt County, NC where he resided as a farmer until he enlisted in Edgecombe County at age 18 on July 31, 1861. Mustered in as a private. Promoted to musician (drummer) in March-August 1863. Present or accounted for until transferred the regimental band in September-October 1863. He later served as Sergeant Major of this regiment. On January 4, 1866, after the war, he married Martha Frances Sutton of Pitt County, NC. He died on April 17, 1911 in Pitt County, NC.

Lewis, Hillsman, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. E, 7th Reg, (Donna Carol Lewis Mayo, Great Great Granddaughter;

Hillsman Lewis, a Nash County farmer, enlisted on June 1, 1861 at the age of 23. He enlisted in Company E 7th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, at Still Hope in Nash County, NC. Records show him as present and accounted for through October 1864. He is next listed as paroled on May 12, 1865, Raleigh, NC. PVT Hillsman Lewis appears on a Roll of Honor as a volunteer at age 24, Nash County, NC. According to census records he died between 1900 and 1910. Wife Sarah Johnson Lewis is listed on the 1910 Wayne County NC census as a widow. The location and exact date of his death are unknown.

Thomas Ruffin Murray was born February 13, 1836 in Hyde County, NC. He resided in Hyde County, NC where he enlisted at the age of 23 on August 13, 1861. Mustered in as private, promoted to corporal September-October 1861. Wounded in the thigh at Seven Springs, VA June 1, 1862. Died of wounds received at Seven Pines. Place and date of death not reported.

Timothy Anson Murray was born July 5, 1830 in Hyde County, NC. He resided in Hyde County where he enlisted September 9, 1861. Mustered in as a corporal. Present or accounted for until captured at New Bern, NC on March 14, 1862. Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, James River, VA August 5, 1862. Died in hospital at Petersburg, VA September 10, 1862.

Nethercutt, Christopher, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. F, 66th Regiment (Janet Nethercutt Craig, Great Grandniece;

Christopher Nethercutt was born about 1847 in Duplin County, NC. He was the son of Col. John H. Nethercutt and Zipha Quinn Nethercutt. Christopher enlisted at Weldon on April 15, 1864 for the war. He was reported absent sick at the brigade infirmary on August 31, 1864. He returned to duty in September - October 1864. No further records exist. Family history maintains that Christopher served in Petersburg and died there, cause, date and place unknown. Burial place unknown. According to the 1850 census and the 1860 Jones County census, Christopher would have only been about 16 years of age when he enlisted. Christopher resided in Jones County, NC, but enlisted in Weldon, NC where the 66th regiment, which was the regiment of his father, Col. John H. Nethercutt, was assigned in August of 1864, leaving the conjecture that Christopher sought to be with his father. No family, county, or state records mention Christopher Nethercutt after the war. The Nethercutt homeplace, located outside of Trenton, NC, was burned by Federal Troops. Christopher's stepmother, Susan Dixon Nethercutt, fled Trenton after the war and relocated back home in Hookerton, NC.

Nethercutt, John H., Colonel, NC Infantry, 66th Regiment (Janet Nethercutt Craig, Great Great Granddaughter;

John H. Nethercutt was born in 1824 in Duplin County, NC to parents Loftin Nethercutt (1770-1844)

and Nancy Inman Barfield (1777-1853). He first married Zilpha Quinn of Duplin County, NC,

and after her death he married Susan Dixon of Hookerton, NC. From 1858 until the beginning of

the War Between the States, he was elected to multiple terms of Sheriff of Jones County, NC.

He enlisted in Company I, 17th N.C. Volunteers (later designated the 27th Regiment N.C. State Troops)

where he served as a lieutenant. In 1862, he was Captain of the 8th Battalion Partisan Rangers

from Jones County, NC. This Battalion joined in 1863 with other local units to form the 66th Regiment

with Nethercutt as Lieutenant Colonel. He remained with the 66th and ultimately attained the rank of Colonel.

He commanded the North Carolina Junior Reserves Brigade at the battle of Bentonville in 1865.

Recommended for promotion to Brigadier General March 30, 1865. Exact status of that promotion

before the war ended is unknown. After the war, December 8, 1867, he was murdered in his home

in Trenton, NC in front of his family. There has been much speculation and debate over who the

murderers were and their motives.

Josephus Pittman was born c.1919 in Lenoir County, NC. He was married to Mary Abbott (1st) and Louisa Blount (2nd)

He joined the Confederate States Army as a member of Capt. Rountree's Company, Clark's Special Bttn, NC Militia.

He began his service on 21 Jan 1862 and continued until 19 Feb 1862. (This company subsequently became Co. C 13th Battalion,

NC Infantry.) No further records of his service are found.

Pittman, Philetus N., NC Infantry, Co. G, 67th Regiment, (Mildred Brooks Bowers, Great Grandniece)

Philetus N. Pittman was born c. 1826 in North Carolina. He was married to Louisa Kilpatrick. He enlisted before 2 Jan 1864 at Camp

Burney in Pitt County, NC in Co. G 1st Battalion NC Local Defense Troops. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant to rank from 2 Jan 1864. Present

or accounted for until transferred to Co. G 67 Reg NC on 18 Jan 1864. Reported present or accounted for through April 30, 1864.

Reported absent on sick leave on June 30, 1864. No further records. His death date and place are unknown.

Poole, Thomas G., PVT, NC Infantry, Co. A, 32nd Reg (Kimberly Ann Poole Riggs, Great Great Great Granddaughter)

Born in Pasquotank County, NC and resided in Tyrrell County, NC prior to enlisting. Married Orphia Brickhouse 17 May 1854. Enlisted as Private on 16 May 1861 at age of 37. Enlisted in Company L, 12th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 16 May 1861. Transferred out of Company L, 12th Infantry Regiment , Transferred Company A, 32nd Infantry Regiment on Oct. 15, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA 10 May 1854. Confined at Point Lookout Maryland 18 May 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY, arriving there on 6 August 1864. Paroled at Elmira on 10 March 1865 and transferred to Boulware's Warf, James River, VA where he was received 15 March 1865 for exchange. Listed on Roll of Honor for 32nd Regiment NC Troops. Buried at Albemarle Church of Christ in the Scuppernong Community near Creswell, North Carolina along beside his wife Orphia.

Daniel J. Shadrick was born about 1839 in Orange County, NC He resided in Granville County, NC where he was a farmer by trade. On September 11, 1856 he married Rosa Huddleston from Pearson County, NC. He enlisted in Granville County at age 23 in Granville County, NC on February 25, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the side and/or chest at Fredericksburg, VA December 13, 1862. Returned to duty in January-February 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right arm at Wilderness, VA May 5, 1864. Returned to duty November-December 1864. Captured near Petersburg, VA April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland until released on June 20, 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance. Death date is unknown.

Benjamin Franklin Stokes was born April 19, 1839 in Pitt County, NC. He enlisted January 28, 1862 in Pitt County, NC. He enlisted as a private in Co. C 13th Battalion NC Infantry. Transferred October 2, 1863 to Co. E 66th NC Infantry. Reported present or accounted for through October 1864. On April 1, 1900 he married Hattie Tripp of Pitt County, NC. He died January 10, 1924 in Pitt County, NC.

William Henry Warters, a Lenoir County, NC farmer, enlisted on 6 May 1862 in Lenoir County, NC at age 32. He was present and accounted for May until July 23, 1862 when he is listed as "died" in Petersburg. No cause of death is listed. Oral family history is that his mother sent for his body and buried him at Warters Cemetery in the Wheat Swamp Community of Lenoir County, NC. He is listed on the Confederate Roll of Honor as PVT Wm. H. Warters, age 32, volunteer.

Samuel Gibbs Watson was born June 11, 1812 in Hyde County, NC. He was mustered in at Middleton, NC as a private on September 9, 1961. Died of disease on March 9, 1862. Listed on Roll of Honor for 33rd Regiment as a volunteer.

Marshall D. Whitehurst, Sergeant, NC Cavalry, Co. K, 41st Regiment, was born May 13, 1828 in Pitt County, NC,

where he resided as a farmer. On February 1, 1855 he married Mary Elizabeth Taylor of Edgecombe County, NC.

He enlisted on May 16, 1862 and was mustered in as a private and appointed Corporal between December 1862

and November to December 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant February 29, 1864. Wounded in action near

Hanover Court House, VA June 3, 1864 and retired to the Invalid Corps December 1, 1864. Assigned to light

duty as a hospital guard at Lynchburg VA December 6, 1864 and reported as being on duty through

February 24, 1865. He died June 7, 1907 in Pitt County, NC.

William Alfred Whitehurst was born June 20, 1820 in Pitt County, NC. On July 10, 1855 he married Britannia Frances Jenkins of Pitt County. He enlisted January 25, 1863 in Pitt County, NC. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Lynchburg VA November 5, 1863.

William Ivey Whitehurst was born October 2, 1830 in Pitt County, NC. In February of 1852 he married Martha Jane Carson of Pitt County, NC. He resided in Pitt County and was a farmer by trade until enlisting in Co. B, 33rd Regiment in Edgecombe County at age 25 on August 19, 1861.Present or accounted for until wounded in head at Sharpsburg, Maryland on or about September 17, 1862. Reported absent wounded without leave in November - December 1862. Reported absent wounded in January - February 1863. Returned to duty in January-February 1864. Wounded in the left hip at Jericho Mills, Virginia on or about May 22, 1864. Reported absent wounded or absent sick through October 1864. Reported present but sick in November-October 1864. Retired from service on January 1 or January 25, 1865 by reason of disability from wounds. Died November 6, 1911 in Pitt County, NC.
