James W. Hart was born 16 January 1841 in Granville County, NC. On 8 December 1859 he married Rebecca Frances Currin of Granville County, NC. He resided in Granville County, NC and enlisted 28 February 1862 in Jones County, NC as a PVT at age 25. He enlisted Co. I 23rd NC Regiment. Promoted to sergeant 10 October 1862. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, VA April 9, 1865. He died 9 June 1906 in Granville County, NC.

Hart, William Washington, Corporal, NC Infantry, Co. I, 23rd Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Grandniece)
William Washington Hart was born 17 January 1845 in Granville County, NC. Enlisted 17 June 1861 in Granville Co., NC at age 20. Mustered in as a private and promoted to corporal in March 1862 March 1864. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, VA on April 9, 1865. On May 20, 1865 he married Sallie J. Knott in Granville County, NC. Died April 19, 1814 in Granville County, NC.

Hester, Henry J., PVT, NC Infantry, Co. I, 23rd Regiment (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Great Grandniece)
Henry J. Hester was born July 12, 1838 in Granville County, NC. On September 30, 1858 he married Martha Elliott in Granville County, NC. He enlisted at age 25 on June 17, 1861. He was mustered in as a sergeant but was reduced to ranks in May-October 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Seven Pines, VA on or about May 31, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded in the neck at Chancellorsville, VA May 1-4 in 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date and was detailed for duty with the pontoon train on August 1 1863. Reported absent on detail through October 1864. Returned to duty in November-December 1864. Present or accounted for through December 31, 1864. "Considered one of the most gallant soldiers in [the]Co[mpany]."

Hester, Robert, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. I, 23rd Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Great Grandniece)
Robert Hester, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. I, 23rd Regiment, was born c. 1840 in North Carolina to Francis and Mary Hester. He resided in Granville County where he enlisted on June 17, 1861 at age 21. Present and accounted for until wounded at Seven Pines, Va in May of 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Present or accounted for until wounded in the left hand at Chancellorsville, VA May 3, 1863. Returned to duty and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House April 9,1865. Nominated for the Badge of Distinction for Gallantry at Chancellorsville. He married Mollie Knott on December 17, 1865 in Granville County, NC.

Hester, Thomas B., PVT, NC Infantry, Co. H, 23rd Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Great Grandniece)
Thomas B. Hester, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. H, 23rd Regiment, was born 1829 to Francis and Mary Hester of Granville County, NC. He married Catharine Satterwhite on May 7, 1850 in Granville County. He was a farmer by occupation and died November 9, 1905 in Wilkes County, NC. He enlisted at age 33 as a private in Iredell County, NC on September 7, 1862 and was present and accounted for through December 1854.

Hester, William F., PVT, NC Infantry, Co. F, 17th Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Great Grandniece)
William F. Hester, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. F, 17th Regiment, was born c. 1827 in Granville Co, NC. He was the son of Francis and Mary Hester of Granville County. William F. married Rebecca Farabough on May 18, 1860 in Granville County, NC. He enlisted March 10, 1863 in Person County, NC, and was present and accounted for through October 1864. His date and place of death is unknown.

House, Berry Ashley, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. B, 33rd Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Great Great Granddaughter)
Berry Ashley House, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. B, 33rd Regiment, was born February 4, 1827 in Pitt County, NC where he resided as a farmer. On October 9, 1845 he married Nancy Andrews of Edgecombe County, NC. He enlisted in Edgecombe County, NC on July 31, 1861 at age 34. He was present or accounted for until he was reported absent/wounded at Fussell's Mill, VA August 16, 1864. His left leg was amputated. He was reported absent/wounded through February 1865. He died January 16, 1901 in Pitt County, NC.

House, James W. J., 2nd Lieut. NC Infantry, Co F, 30th Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Great Grandniece)
James W. J. House, 2nd Lieut. NC Infantry, Co F, 30th Regiment, was born December 18, 1833 in Pitt County, NC. On September 26, 1867 he married Mary M. Teel in Pitt County, NC. He resided in Edgecombe County, NC where he enlisted at age 26 on August 31, 1861. Mustered in as private. Promoted to sergeant on March 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Kelly's Ford, VA on or about November 7, 1863. Returned to duty prior to January 1, 1864. Elected 2nd Lieutenant on May 24, 1864. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right foot and captured at Appomattox Court House VA April 9, 1865. Confined at various federal hospitals until confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland May 9, 1865. Released on June 10, 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance. Nominated for the Badge of Distinction for Gallantry at Chancellorsville, VA May 1-4, 1863. He died August 17, 1924 in Vance County, NC.

Hudson, Redden, Taff's District Company, 19th Regiment, Militia (North Carolina) (Great great granddaughters, Karen Nethercutt,

Redden Hudson was born in Beaufort County, NC in 1822, to parents John Hudson, Jr. and Lovie Louisa Galloway Hudson. He was a life-long resident of the Chicod Township of Pitt County, NC, and a member of Black Jack Church. He was a blacksmith by trade. According to original papers in the collection of Bill Kittrell and wife Mary Hudson Kittrell, Reddin Hudson was commissioned as 3rd Lieutenant of Captain Bryant Smith's Company of the 19th Regiment of Militia of the County of Pitt on 10 October 1850. He was then commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant of the Taff Company of the 19th Regiment of Militia for the County of Pitt, NC on 14 October 1851. The last set of papers indicates he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of the Taffs District Company in the 19th Regiment North Carolina Militia of Pitt County on the 1st of August 1861. Redding Hudson died unexpectedly on March 18, 1901. According to his estate papers, a coffin was purchased along with bricks
for his grave; however, the exact location of his grave has not been determined. He is thought to be buried at Hudson's Crossroads at a family cemetery but no headstone is located there.

Hyman, William Ashley, 1st Sergeant, Co. D, NC 44th Regiment (Jean Miller Adams, Granddaughter)
William Ashley Hyman was born in Pitt County, NC, where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Pitt Co. at age 18. He mustered in as a private on January 27, 1862. Promoted to corporal on September 8, 1863. Promoted to 1st Sergeant subsequent to October 31, 1864. Present or accounted for until he surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA April 9, 1865. North Carolina pension records indicate he was wounded at Wilderness, VA May 6, 1863. Soldier's Application for pension dated 15 May 1923. He is buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery in Greenville, NC.\

Johnston, Godfrey Stephen, PVT, NC Infantry, Co. H, 27th Regiment, (Cynthia Manning Smith, Great Great Grandniece)
Godfrey Stephen Johnston was born 1 May 1840 in Pitt County, NC. He died 3 December 1908 in Pitt County and is buried in a cemetery off of NC 33 near the old location of Parker's Chapel Church. He was married on 7 Feb 1866 to Elizabeth House (18 Dec 1847-30 Oct 1909).
He enlisted in Pitt Co on August 20, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded in the leg at Gum Swamp on May 22, 1863. Leg amputated. Reported absent wounded through October 1864. Reported absent on detail at Tarboro from December 1, 1864 through February 1865. Paroled at Greensboro on May 3, 1865.

Jones, Robert M., PVT, NC Infantry, Co. B, 23rd Regiment, (Anne Elizabeth House Carroll, Grandniece)
Robert M. Jones was born December 6, 1842 in Pitt County, NC where he resided as a farmer until he enlisted in Edgecombe County at age 18 on July 31, 1861. Mustered in as a private. Promoted to musician (drummer) in March-August 1863. Present or accounted for until transferred the regimental band in September-October 1863. He later served as Sergeant Major of this regiment. On January 4, 1866, after the war, he married Martha Frances Sutton of Pitt County, NC. He died on April 17, 1911 in Pitt County, NC.
