Our Chapter History
The George B. Singletary Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was organized June 19, 1899, in Greenville, North Carolina. Mrs. T. J. Jarvis served as its first president. The Greenville chapter was named in honor of Colonel George B. Singletary, a prominent Greenville attorney and the Commander of the 44th Regiment N.C. Troops. Colonel Singletary was killed in action June 5, 1862, about eight miles west of Washington, N.C., at the Battle of Tranter's Creek. The site is located today just off of U.S. 264 at the Pitt County/Beaufort County line. A North Carolina Civil War Trails marker has been placed just east of the county line to commemorate the battle and in honor of Colonel Singletary.
The objectives of our Chapter are Historical, Educational, Benevolent, Memorial, and Patriotic. We strive to preserve the memory and honor of our Confederate ancestors; we collect and preserve the materials necessary for a truthful history of the War Between the States; we protect, preserve, and mark the places made historic by Confederate valor; and we record and educate on the lives of Southern men and women, their contributions, their struggles, and their patriotic devotion during the War Between the States, and their efforts during the post-War reconstruction of the South.
We typically meet one Sunday of each month at 2 pm. Our meetings are very casual, and are open to anyone with an interest in preserving our Confederate history, male or female, anywhere in Eastern North Carolina. We do not limit ourselves to the Pitt County/Greenville area.

Feb 27: Next chapter meeting in Kinston, NC on Saturday Feb. 27th. We will tour the CSS Neuse II Replica in downtown Kinston at 10 AM. Meet us at the corner of Heritage and Gordon Street. Dress will be very casual/appropriate for walking. Refreshments afterward at a place TBA.
March 4: District VIII Meeting, hosted by the John W. Durham UDC Chapter in Wilson.
Location: Something Different Cafe, 3342 Airport Blvd., Wilson, NC. Registration at 9:15. Meeting at 10:00 a.m. $15 Registration fee.
March 20-21: Reenactment, “The Battle of Bentonville,” big event staged every five years with demonstrations, camps, lectures and battles at 3 pm Saturday and 1:30 pm Sunday. $8/adult per day. Complete details, tickets: www.bentonville145.com.

May 8: 10:00 a.m. Confederate Memorial Ceremony, Cherry Hill Cemetery, Greenville, NC. Following that we will meet at Trinity Cemetery in Chocowinity, NC at the Maj. General Bryan Grimes monument for a brief Confederate Memorial Ceremony.
